POKHARA, Feb 4: Health services in Manipal Teaching Hospital, Pokhara, remained closed for the third consecutive day on Wednesday due to strike called by the health workers and staff in the hospital.

They launched the protests demanding that the hospital management provided them minimum wages as set by the government and give them permanent status after 240 days of service.

The patients admitted to the hospital are in trouble after talks could not yield an agreement on Tuesday.

Being deprived of treatment, patients have started leaving the hospital and the management has also requested them for discharge.

The hospital management discharged more than half of the admitted patients from the hospital on Monday and Tuesday alone saying that the hospital is unable to provide them treatment.

“The talks on Tuesday terminated without discussing the main agenda,” said Shiva KC, treasurer of All Nepal Health Workers’ Association, which is leading the strike. “We will not resume work unless the management is ready to address the workers’ demands.”

The hospital discharged 102 patients on Monday and 49 other patients on Tuesday. Currently 180 patients are still in the hospital. Patients could be seen packing their bags to leave the hospital on Wednesday.

“We are compelled to request the patients for discharge,” said Sanjiv Jalali, administrative director of the hospital.

About 750 persons are working at the 700-bed hospital.
