KATHMANDU, Sep 1: It has been learnt that four inmates with chronic diseases at the Sundhara-based Central Jail died as a result of poor medical care inside the jail.
The inmates have not gone for regular health checkup after the COVID-19 cases were confirmed at the jail, an official at the jail told Republica.

In the last two days, four inmates at the jail have died. One of them has tested positive for COVID-19. They [deceased inmates] were diabetes, blood pressure and kidney patients.
According to the Central Jail, one of the deceased was 40 years old, while others were in their 50’s. “It was difficult for the jail administration to take the inmates to hospital for health checkups. The inmates were taken care of inside the jail boundaries,” said Jailer Laxmi Prasad Baskota, adding that the security officials involved in taking inmates to hospitals for check ups had tested positive for COVID-19. He further added that all the deceased were suffering from chronic diseases.
In the meantime, 30 inmates at the jail have shown COVID-19-like symptoms. According to the jail, there are 85 inmates with chronic health diseases at the jail.
As of Tuesday, 109 inmates and security officials have tested positive for COVID-19 at the jail. There are a total of 3,271 inmates in the jail.
