You must have cleaned your home on Dashain-Tihar as is the norm but in a hurry to get it in order before you started entertaining or hosting parties you might have skipped a few things. It’s by tending to the often-unnoticed-but-important aspects of your home that it can ever be truly clean.
Remove cloudiness from glasses
Have you ever noticed how sometimes your glass cups and bowls still look foggy even after a good wash? Similarly, the glasses in your cupboards and showcases also tend to get cloudy over time. This can happen when condensation forms on the glass. Condensation is triggered by the combination of both cool glass surfaces and increased moisture in the air from inside. You can get rid of the condensation by letting air pass freely through your rooms. Similarly, another reason for fogginess on wine glasses, cups and bowls is due to the hard minerals in the water in your house. If the fogginess is due to hard-water minerals, all you have to do is soak your cups for five minutes in white vinegar. Since it’s acetic acid, it’ll dissolve the minerals. If stubborn spots still persist, gently rub them off with baking soda. Then rinse the glasses by hand and dry them with a lint-free towel or a microfiber cloth before drinking out of them again.
Monsoon Home Cleaning Tips
Restore your shower pressure
A good shower is when you can feel the pressure of the warm water on your back. The shower pressure tends to become weaker after some time and a weak shower pressure can take away from a calming shower experience. This happens mainly because of two reasons: reduced water pressure at the main water valve of the house and collection of sediment in the showerhead. You can unclog your showerhead by mixing equal parts white vinegar and water and pouring it into a plastic bag. After that, tie the bag around the showerhead to immerse the holes in the solution and secure it with a hair tie or a rubber band. Let soak up to an hour, then remove and wipe away the loosened deposits. And it would also be a good idea to check to see if the main water valve in your house is fully open or not.
De-grease cabinets
Your cooking utensils, kitchen cabinets, windows or anything that’s around the cooking stove tends to be coated with (even if the thinnest) layer of grease. At first, the greasing isn’t that apparent but if not cleaned for a long period of time, you start to notice that stickiness in your furniture. In order to get rid of this grease, dampen a clean, dry cloth with undiluted white vinegar and wipe them down. After that, rinse the cloth with warm water, squeeze out most of the moisture, and use it to rinse the cabinetry. Lastly, dry the damp surfaces with a paper towel (especially if the furniture is wood), but if sticky spots still remain then you need a do-over. Another method to get rid of the greasiness is by adding a small amount of dish soap to warm water and mixing it up in a spray bottle. After that, you can spray the mixture on your furniture for grease-free cabinets.
Give your bathrooms a good shine
You can often determine the cleanliness of a house by taking a good look at the bathrooms. Apart from the basic hygiene that is to be maintained in the bathroom, you should also pay special attention in cleaning the tiles, mirrors, taps, etc. And it’s important to freshen up the shower curtains at regular intervals of time. Use a mixture of vinegar and water to clean your mirror. To get rid of the grime collected in the grout between your tiles, mix three or four cups of household chlorine bleach in one liter water and use a stiff brush to apply it to one small area at a time. Wear rubber gloves and eye protection while handling chlorine. Let it sit for several minutes, then scrub and rinse. This is an easy and effective way to keep your bathroom looking as good as new.
Make a ‘right away’ laundry basket
One of the main things that make a home look messy and unclean are clothes that are scattered around the house. Be it dirty laundry or clean clothes that are yet to be folded, clothes tend to make a room feel congested and stuffy. One way you can prevent this from happening is by making a ‘right away’ laundry basket. Dress shirts, clothes with stains, school clothes or any other clothing item that needs an immediate wash should go into this basket and should be dumped into the washing machine as quickly as possible. By following this quick routine, you will find yourself doing small batches of laundry every day greatly reducing the pile of dirty clothes in your closet. Similarly, make sure to fold them and keep them in their respective places as soon as you are done drying them.
