KATHMANDU, March 25: The government is all set to establish a data centre in Hetuda in order to secure information of private and public sector and also use it as a backup for the main data centre at Singha Durbar, Kathmandu.

An information guard known as Disaster Recovery Centre (DRC), will be developed with the financial support of Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) at the estimated cost of US$ 4.6 million (Rs 360 million). [break]

KOICA, which also supported the government to build the Integrated Data Centre (IDC) inside Singha Durbar, handed over the center to the National Information Technology Center (NITC) some two and half years ago.

IDC, which is used by governmental and non-governmental organizations to store their important information, is at risk since it doesn´t have any backup.

After the completion of DRC in Hetauda, important information can be backed up in case of natural disaster and human errors. “But we don´t have backup to save information at the moment and if anything goes wrong we are bound to lose information.” Anup Baskota, executive director of the NITC told Republica.

Banks are also reluctant to store their information. “I am hopeful that banking sector will also have confidence to use it after we install the back up,” said Baskota.

“The recovery centre for backup should be located away from the main data centre and at different locations,” Baskota explained the reason behind establishing DRC in Hetuda.
