Dashain aayo!

By
KATHMANDU, Sept 21: Nothing is as exciting as waiting for something exciting!

Representatives of our great festival, Dashain, are kites in the sky, the shopping frenzy that grips us and the hard-to-get bus tickets. Only a couple of weeks to Dashain but we’re already experiencing the thrill of it. [break]

For many of our readers, the crowd and the colorful kites are indications of the festival. While returning home for Dashain vacations is something to look forward to for some, for others it’s watching little children talk about their new ‘Dashain clothes’. Here, some of them share their memories of those few pre- Dashain weeks and their plans for this year.

“I feel Dashain is around when tickets for the buses plying from the Valley are booked as soon as the counters open, when I see people flying kites and the shopping area is crowded. Mostly, the Bijaya Dashami tunes everywhere remind me that Dashain is here,” says Arjun Thapa Magar.

For one of our readers, Baba Dai, the festival is all about relaxing and the long sleeping hours.

Dashain means family time, and for the majority of the people in the Valley, it means heading home to their own villages, towns and cities. Subsequently, Kathmandu will take on a quieter look. Grishma Gautam says, “I feel like Dashain is here when the population in my area starts decreasing as many people go back to their villages and also when people stand in queues in banks just to exchange old notes for new ones.”

Despite all the excitement, Grishma will not be celebrating this year as she’ll be busy studying. “I have my exams during the whole Dashain and Tihar period, so I will be busy preparing for it.”

Amulya Dahal’s plan for Dashain involves eating mutton delicacies and wandering. In anticipation of the delicious meals, he says, “We’ve bought a goat for that too.” In fact, when he sees goats for sale, he feels like the big festival has arrived.

Similarly, the excitement in the air makes Supriya Thapa happy for any little reason as does watching children happily choosing their special Dashainko luga in shopping malls and bazaars. “My plan for this Dashain is buying new clothes as usual and enjoying the respite from work,” she states.

Likewise, Pawan Lamichhane’s Dashain is all about new clothes, flying kites, visiting relatives with family members, enjoying the break from studies and flying high on the swing. However, this year’s Dashain is going to be extra special for Pawan as he plans to go trekking with his brothers and friends.
