Dalits flee home after threats

KANCHANPUR, Feb. 11: Some half a dozen Dalit families have left home in Parasan VDC of southern region of Kanchanpur district as they were threatened for life by the non-dalits if they did not return the bride, who had married a non- dalit boy.



The Dalit families left home due to the threats of the relatives of the girl who married with Laxman Sunar, a Dalit in Prithvi Basti of Parasan- 4 a week ago.



Both had fled from home after intercaste marriage on February 3 and families of the girl threatened them after four days to bring her home, said Dalit leaders. We left home after they threatened after February 7, said a local Bhakta Bahadur BK and there are no one at homes except for women.



They have now been living in the district headquarters Mahendranagar and now the non-dalits have been threatening the women of the families as well.

Sunar´s brother Ram Bahadur said the Dalit males were followed by hooligans if they entered the village.



The bride side has taken the girl home to settle the dispute. She was taken home by the Ward Police saying she will be taken to the District Police Office assisted by Maya Negi of the UCPN-Maoist affiliated Women´s Association.



After the girl was sent home, the bride side and the political parties´ dalit sister organisation leaders had a verbal exchange at the Ward Police Office.
