BIRGUNJ, Feb 27: Constituent Assembly member and Chairman of Dalit Janajati Party, Bishwendra Paswan, has objected to the listing of dalit people under the "Madhesi" category.

The government on February 3 had listed 92 various caste groups under the Madhesi category to provide them reservations in public service and education.

Speaking at a function in Birgunj on Friday, Paswan threatened to launch strong protests unless the government corrected what he called a "mistake".

"Dalits are indigenous to the Tarai but they are not Madhesi," he said, adding, "So the decision should be revoked."

Indian Minister to visit Nepal for Dalit meet

Meanwhile, Indian minister for Chemicals, Fertilizers and Steel Ram Vilas Paswan is visiting Nepal next week to participate in a 2-day Dalit conference due to be held in Birgunj. The conference begins on March 3.

"I will be attending a conference of a Dalit party," Indopia news portal quoted Paswan as saying. "The conference will take up issues like social empowerment of Dalits and their adequate representation in politics."

Paswan, who belongs to India´s Lok Jana Shakti Party, has been engaged in Dalit politics for decades in India. He is visiting Nepal at the invitation of Dalit Janajati Party (DJP). “We chose him because of his role in the Vishwa Arakshan Manch, an organization that is campaigning worldwide for reservation for the underprivileged communities to lift them,” Thakur Chandra Gahat Raj, a leader of DJP, has been quoted by SindhToday.net news portal.
