KATHMANDU, Feb 21: Three days after writing to the prime minister, the Committee to Protect Journalists called on the government to investigate attacks on journalists, according to a CPJ statement received here on Saturday.

The global journalist watchdog issued the statement on Friday from New York in response to news reports that unidentified gunmen shot and injured Gadhimai FM radio program coordinator Gyanendra Raj Misra on Thursday in Birgunj. in the restive southern plains region.

"We are relieved that Gyanendra Raj Misra was not seriously injured in this shooting, the latest violent attack in a series of many involving the media," said Bob Dietz, CPJ´s Asia program coordinator. "The government of Nepal must investigate these attacks, and combat the climate of impunity it has allowed to flourish to the detriment of press freedom."

The CPJ wrote to Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Tuesday protesting unpunished attacks on the media.
