Condolence and tribute messages pour in from international communities

KATHMANDU, Feb 9: Condolences poured in from across the world on Tuesday following the death of former prime minister and Nepali Congress President Sushil Koirala.

Indian President Pranab Mukherjee issued a letter of condolence to express his grief over the demise of Koirala, who was 78 years old. In the letter, he said that Koirala, who led Nepal during the crucial period of political transition and promulgation of constitution, also worked tirelessly to foster close and multifaceted relations between Nepal and India.   

Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also tweeted that India lost a valued friend. He stated that he was pained by the demise of Koirala.  

Nisha Biswal, assistant secretary of State for South and Central Asia, at the US Department of States, tweeted “Sad news out of Nepal today. Our deepest condolences to the Koirala family and to the Nepalese people on the passing of Former PM Koirala.”

Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay tweeted that he joined Nepalese in mourning the passing away of their former prime minister Sushil Koirala. He described Koirala as an outstanding leader.  

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi wrote a letter to his Nepali counterpart Kamal Thapa expressing grief on the demise of Koirala.  

“Minister Wang Yi said the Chinese side was sad to learn the unfortunate news of passing away of Sushil Koirala ,” reads a press statement issued by the Kathmandu-based Chinese embassy.

Similarly, Japanese ambassador to Nepal Masashi Ogawa issued a condolence letter following the sudden demise of  Koirala. A statement issued by Ogawa reads that Koirala had made a historic contribution to democratization of Nepal and took the leadership for promulgating the new constitution of Nepal.

Rensje Teekrink, ambassador of European Union, expressed sadness over the demise of Koirala. In a statement, Teekrink said that Nepal lost an honest and dedicated statesman, who through his determination and thoughtfulness steered the nation out of a long period of political uncertainty.
