The government had granted approval of trade mark of Nepali Chayngra pashmina in October paving the way for full-ledged promotional campaign for the third largest exportable handicraft from Nepal.[break]
Nepal Pashmina Industries Association (NPIA) -- the umbrella organization of pashmina entrepreneurs -- distributed around 600 pieces of label to five exporters on Thursday marking the formal initiation of label distribution.
Those getting the label of Nepali pashmina in the first phase are Indecom Soie Pvt Ltd, Sagarmatha Silk Industry, Nepal Pashmina Udhyog, Everest Pashmina Knitting and Webbing Industry and Everest Cashmere Industry.
Mandu Babu Adhikary, chief program officer of NPIA, said exporters can get the label of Chyangra pashmina if their products meet exportable quality standards.
Speaking on the occasion, Pushpa Man Shrestha, president of NPIA said export of Nepali Chyangra pashmina would go up with the launching of the new trade mark. Export of pashmina products dropped by 8.3 percent to Rs 600 million during the first five months of the current fiscal year 2010/11.
Chandra Kumar Ghimire, joint secretary of the Ministry of Commerce and Supplies (MoCS), said the government has allocated Rs 6.3 million to establish testing lab for exportable handcraft products besides initiating diplomatic efforts to promote pashmina by mobilizing Nepali mission abroad through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Nepali pashmina trademark has already been registered in 38 countries and the registration process is in the pipeline in eight more countries.
