A meeting of Kathmand Valley based poultry entrepreneurs held on Monday decided to lower chicken prices. [break]
Gokarna Ghimire, president of Poultry Farmers´ Association in Kathmandu, said with the fresh revision in prices, poultry farmers would get Rs 120 per kg for live chicken. Customers will have to pay Rs 130 per kg for live chicken.
With improve production in hatcheries, prices of broiler and layer chicks have also been lowered by Rs 10 per head to Rs 50 and Rs 65 per head respectively. Chicken price has continued to fall for the last five months after hitting an all time high of Rs 270 per kg in February.
Meanwhile, traders said supplies of goats in the markets in the capital have increased to 8,000 heads per week, up from 6,000 heads recorded a few weeks before due to substantial rise in imports from India -the sole supplier of goats to Nepal.
Giriraj Basnet, general secretary of Animal Traders Association - the association of traders dealing with goats, supplies have increased remarkably in this prime season for imports. “The improved supplies from India have come as a relief for us as the supplies from local farmers have dropped to around five percent of the total demand,” Basnet said.
Supplies of goats from local farms have been going down with the advent of raining season, opening up the market further for goats from the southern neighbor.
Mutton has remained stable at Rs 500 per kg for the last one month.
