Thakur Poudel, president of Meat Suppliers´ Association, said depleting supply from major source districts due to low production in farms was the major reason behind rise in chicken prices. “We have been failing to supply chicken as per the demand in the market.
Increasing demand and depleting supply has forced us to revise prices upward twice for the last one month,” Poudel added.
He, however, expected the price to east down a bit as the supplies have started improving in the last couple of days.
“Though production will increase in the next couple of months, price won´t drop as the demand is expected to rise further,” Poudel added.
About 400 meat shops sell about 25 tons of chicken in the lake city every day.
Madhusudhan Koirala, president of Poultry Farmers´ Association, said low imports of parent chicks in the pervious months had pushed down production and sparked supply deficit in the market. “Low supply in the market is the major factor behind price rise,” Koirala added.
Supply of chicken was affected last year also due to restriction in import of poultry products from India following the outbreak of bird flu in both the countries.
Pokhara, the second largest tourist destination in the country after the capital, has been experiencing sharp rise chicken prices as compared to other cities.
