Celebrating Womanhood 2011

KATHMANDU, Dec 25: Recognized nationally as one of Nepal’s most prestigious awards for women, the annual ‘Celebrating Womanhood Awards 2011’ took place on December 23 at Yala Maya Kendra, Patan Dhoka, with the felicitation of nine ladies for their success and achievements.



Organized by Creative Statements for the sole purpose of highlighting exemplary women from different walks of life spanning the country, the award established in 2002 has honored 90 deserving women till date. [break]



The recipients have been chosen on the basis of their contribution to their respective area of work in recent years.



Shrijana Singh Yonzon, Creator and Coordinator of the project shared that growing up in a family were women were encouraged to speak helped her realize her dreams into reality.



“We don’t have to be second class citizens and yes, women can bring about positive changes in the society and it all starts with us standing untied,” added she.







The Regional Awards comprises of nine special awards, which are named after nine Hindu Goddesses to honor the symbolism of each goddesses rather than their religious connotations.



The award recipients and the categories of the award are Laxmi Timilsina, Kavre (Annapurna Award), Yam Kumari KC, Myagdi (Bhagwati Award), Swimmer Karishma Karki, Kathmandu (Bhawani Award), Laxmi Adhikari, Kaski (Durga Award), Pema Sherpa, Solukhumbu (Karuna Award), Deepa Rana Magar, Surkhet (Laxmi Award), Shrijana Pradhan, Kathmandu (Mahamaya Award), Kabita Poudyal, Kathmandu (Saraswati Award), Reshma and Mohilal Das, Dhnush (Shakti Award).



Credited for being the first midwife to utilize the Sono Site portable ultrasound machine internationally, senior midwife Pema Sherpa shared that the recognition has boosted her morale and renewed her faith in hard work.



“I have this urgency to pass on as much knowledge as I can to others, and this award has cemented my resolve to do better,” added the sixty- year-old from Phaplu, Solukhumbu.



The function was punctuated by elegant performances by the Kathak troop lead by choreographer and dancer Subima Shrestha, who danced to the theme of “Varsha” the music of which was composed by Gopal Yonzon.



The other highlight of the evening was the electrifying B-boying presentation by Nepal Break-dance Foundation (NBF) Girls.
