CAN officials present Centenary Award<br/>Women cricketers felicitated

KATHMANDU, July 13: Five officials of the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), the winners of the ICC Centenary Award were presented the award at the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS) in Satdobato on Monday. [break]



CAN officials were honored by the ICC (International Cricket Council) on the occasion of 100 years of ICC´s establishment.



Those honored with the award are CAN President Binay Raj Pandey, Vice President Upendra Bhattarai, Secretary Shashi Dutta Pandey, Tarini Bikram Shah and Naresh Shrestha.



CAN President Pandey had collected the awards on behalf of the winners at the ICC meeting held in London last month.



As per an ICC decision to felicitate volunteers who have been working for the development of cricket, CAN had nominated the five officials from Nepal and all the nominations were approved by the ICC.



After receiving the award from Minister for Youth and Sports Gopal Tiwari Nepali, CAN president Pandey said that he was very delighted to have received the award. "This award means a lot to me. It would provide satisfaction to the volunteers who have been involved in cricket for a long time. This is an honor for Nepali cricket," Pandey added.



Women cricketers felicitated



MoYS and CAN felicitated women cricketers at the same function at the ministry on Monday.



Minister for Youth and Sports Nepali presented a cash prize of Rs 25,000 and CAN handed Rs 15,000 to Rubina Chhetry. Likewise, CAN presented Rs 10,000 to Nary Thapa. Both of them had put in brilliant performance in the recently held ACC Women´s T20 Championship at Malaysia. However, Nepal had to remain satisfied with the third position in the tournament.



Rubina had claimed five wickets against Singapore in the last over. Nepali team required only two runs for victory with five wickets remaining. Rubina also became the first Nepali cricketer to claim hat trick in any international match that Nepal contested. Likewise, Nary who claimed 14 wickets in the tournament was awarded with the best bowler of the tournament. The left-handed bowler took five wickets against Bhutan, three against Thailand, two against Hong Kong and four against China. She did not bowl against Iran and Qatar.



Similarly, the ministry also felicitated the U-19 women cricket squad that won the ACC U-19 Women´s Cricket Tournament held at the Malaysia in December 2008. All 14 members of the squad were awarded a cash prize of Rs 10,000 each.
