Cambodian PM's ruling party wins almost all seats in council elections: official results

PHNOM PENH, June 8--The ruling Cambodian People's Party (CPP) of Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen won almost all of the seats in local council elections on May 26, media reports said quoting the official results released by the National Election Committee (NEC) on Saturday.


Seven political parties contested in the third mandate elections for a total of 4,114 council seats including 559 municipal and provincial seats and 3,555 town and district seats, Xinhua News Agency reported. Only three of them won seats, the results showed. The CPP received 550 municipal and provincial seats and 3,484 town and district seats, the results said.

The Khmer National United Party of former Deputy Prime Minister Nhek Bun Chhay got six municipal and provincial seats and 38 town and district seats, while the royalist Funcinpec Party of Prince Norodom Ranariddh earned three municipal and provincial seats and 33 town and district seats, the results indicated.


Held once every five years, the non-universal elections were cast by 11,572 commune chiefs and councilors, typically along party lines, for the municipal, provincial, town and district councilors across the kingdom, Xinhua said.
