KATHMANDU, April 4: At a time when the UCPN (Maoist) and a section of CPN-UML leaders are making calls for the formation of a new government, it appeared on Sunday that lawmakers of the main coalition partner, the Nepali Congress, are also not happy with the Madhav Nepal-led government.

During a parliamentary party meeting of the Nepali Congress, the leaders registered their strong dissatisfaction over the performance and working style of the government. They alleged that the government was working in the vested interests of the UML alone, disregarding other coalition partners. [break]

Seven parliamentarians including Ram Krishna Yadav, Kumar Rai, Keshav Kumar Budhathoki, Harsha Jit Lama, Meena Pandey and Pushpa Bhusal spoke in the meeting. All of them said the government has failed to live up to the expectation of the people and that the ministers representing the party have failed to work effectively.

They also expressed concern about the government´s failure to help return the properties seized by the Maoists and take the peace process and constitution making forward.

Two lawmakers -- Kumar Rai and Keshav Kumar Budhathoki -- also demanded dissolution of the government and formation of a new one under the NC´s leadership.

They argued that it won´t serve any good for the party to stick to the UML-led government since it has utterly failed to deliver. "The image of the party has tarnished because of the already stinking government," a participant quoted them as saying.

Following the call for the change in government, NC Parliamentary Party leader Ram Chandra Poudel argued that the party should not look for changing the government at present.

Poudel suggested the parliamentarians to bring any issue of difference and dissatisfaction to the PP´s notice for internal discussion. "The party should move ahead in united manner," he added.

Talking to media after the meeting, he dismissed the demand for government change. "Our support for the government remains intact."

The NC called its PP meeting to discuss its role in the winter session of legislature-parliament that began Sunday.

NC PP Spokesperson Nabindra Raj Joshi told the media that the meeting decided to remain vigilant over the government´s activities and study the bills that the government is preparing to table in the House.

He said the lawmakers registered their dissatisfaction over the party´s ministers´ performance.
