BUSINESS BRIEFS: EWC awards envoy Sharma

KATHMANDU, March 13: East-West Center (EWC) and the East-West Center Association (EWCA) of the USA have jointly awarded Dr Shankar Sharma, Nepali ambassador to the USA, with Distinguished Alumni Award for his contribution in promoting relations among the people of different regions of the world.



Issuing a statement Friday, Nepali embassy in Washington DC said the award recognizes outstanding accomplishments including significant contributions to the promotion of relations among the peoples of Asia, the Pacific and the USA, significant achievement in his career and contributing support for the goal and objectives of the center. Other recipients of the award are D Hao Ping, the vice minister for education in China, Dr Rajendra K Pachauri, chair of the Inter-governmental Panel on Climate Change which received Nobel Peace Prize and Dr Delia B Rodriguez-Amaya, professor at the University of Campinas, Brazil.



Sharma will be officially presented with the award during the EWC/EWCA international conference scheduled to be held from 2-5 July, 2010 in Honolulu in which US President Barack Obama will be the chief guest.





Samsung launches three CDMA phones



KATHMANDU, March 13: International Marketing Systems (IMS) Tele Trade Pvt Ltd, the authorized dealer for Samsung mobile phones in Nepal, Saturday launched three Samsung CDMA phones in the market.



The B619 and B309 are the CDMA phones, while the W259 is a dual standby GSM and CDMA phone.



Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Deepak Malhotra, vice president of IMS, informed that the new sets come with a year warranty and six months on battery.



Customers of these new sets will get United Telecom Limited´s U-SIM worth Rs 2,065, which includes talk time worth Rs 1,500, free of cost, according to the company.



Malhotra also added that the company aims to sell 120,000 Samsung CDMA phones by 2010. He also informed that IMS Tele Trade was the first company to legally import mobile sets in Nepal.



“Of about 160,000 mobile sets that enter the country every year, about 41,000 are from Samsung,” he claimed. He also said Samsung mobile phones were enjoying 25 percent of market share in Nepal.



Samsung CDMA phones will be available from around 600 retail shops across the country. Samsung phones are ably supported by high tech service center for after sales services, the company said in a statement.

Citizens Bank launches Rastrasevak saving



KATHMANDU, March 13: Citizens Bank International has launched Rastrasewak saving account for civil servants. This account, which gives 8 percent interest on daily savings, mainly targets government employees and those receiving government pensions.



The bank also claims that it has been providing more interest return than commercial banks. Apart from this, the bank has been providing simple saving, free ATM service, children saving, Jestha Nagarik saving and Mahila saving from the Chitwan branch.



Meanwhile, Narayani Development Bank has entered 9th year of operation. The bank organized a special program to mark its ninth anniversary.
