KATHMANDU, July 19: Bus and transport entrepreneurs and transport workers have demanded that the government scrap the Vehicle and Consignment Tracking System(VCTS) that took effect from July 17, 2019.

Organizing a press conference in the capital on Friday to express their dissatisfaction with the VCTS introduced by the government to track the movement of commodities electronically, they have demanded that the VCTS be scrapped.

According to the VCTS, transport entrepreneurs will be liable to fines of up to Rs 50,000 for the first time and Rs 75,000 for the second time if they do not abide by the rules laid down in the VCTS. However, the punishment is not confined to a fine. When transport entrepreneurs fail to abide by the rules laid down in the VCTS, their vehicles carrying them will also be seized by the security personnel, according to the provision made in the VCTS.

They have vented their anger on the government that introduced the VCTS saying that it is not the industrialists who export and import goods but the bus and transport entrepreneurs involved in the transport of those goods that will bear the brunt of the VCTS.

Speaking at the press conference organized in the capital, Gokarna Parajuli, a co-coordinator of an alliance of bus and transport entrepreneurs and transport workers, has warned of bringing transport service to a grinding halt across the country.
