BRIEF NEWS: TMDP-N registered at EC

KATHMANDU, Jan 31: The Election Commission on Monday registered Tarai Madhes Democratic Party-Nepal (TMDP-N) as a new party, which split from TMDP on December 31, 2010.



“TMDP-N got recognition as a new party,” Rajendra Sharma, EC spokesperson, told Republica. Earlier, leaders from TMDP-N had written to Speaker Subash Nembang demanding that the new party be given status of a new party in parliament.[break]TMDP-N is headed by Mahendra Prasad Yadav.



Police rescue abducted man



SIRAHA: Police on Monday rescued Punit Chaudhary, who was abducted in Siraha on Friday by a group of gunmen, from India.



Punit´s family had asked police on Saturday to rescue him. The 27 years old was kidnapped while returning home from his medical store Friday evening. Police have not yet disclosed the details about the rescue of Punit.



In Saptari, the whereabouts of Sunil Chaudhary, 13, who was abducted a week ago, still remains unknown. A seventh grader at Model School in Rajbiraj, Sunil was kidnapped while returning home. Sunil´s kidnappers have demanded huge ransom from his father Shyam Dev Chaudhari through the phone. Police say they have launched a rescue operation to release Sunil safely.


Ex-cop robbed at bank



RAJBIRAJ: A former policeman has been robbed on the bank premises after withdrawing his pension money in Rajbiraj Monday. A group of persons had spitted beetle leaf chew on Surya Kumar Rai´s back and looted the bag containing Rs 40,000 when he put the bag down near a tap on the bank premises to wash away the stain. Rai immediately informed the District Police Office about the incident but the robbers have yet to be caught.


Missing boy found dead sans gold earring


MAHENDRANAGAR: A nine-year-old boy, whose body was recovered in Darchula four days ago, is suspected to have been murdered for the gold earring he was wearing. The fact that his gold earring was missing has led to such suspicion. The body of Sunil Dhami of Mallikarjun-1 was found last Friday. Dhami went missing while returning home from school on January 13. He was a fourth grader at Mallikarjun Higher Secondary School. His father Dipendra Singh Dhami said the gold earring he was wearing was traced at a jewelry shop at the bordering Indian town of Baluwakot. He has informed the police about the find.



Pashupati treasury unlocking stayed



KATHMANDU:The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday stayed the cabinet´s decision to open Pashupatinath temple´s treasury until the next decision of the court.



The cabinet meeting nearly one month ago had decided to open the treasury and make it public.



Responding to a writ petition filed by Bharat Jangam, the single bench of SC Justice Girish Chandra Lal ordered the government authorities not to open the treasury saying that the issue is a serious one. The bench has summoned both the sides for further hearing on whether to continue the stay order. The bench has set February 10 for next hearing.



ICRC support for landmine victims



KATHMANDU: The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) on Monday said it will continue support to Nepal Army-run physical rehabilitation centers in Kathmandu and Pokhara that have been assisting victims of landmine. An ICRC statement said it renewed the Memorandum of Understanding with the army for the third time. ICRC bears the cost of services, including regular maintenance at the center.
