JANAKPUR, Feb 15: The bomb disposal squad from Nepal Army has arrived and begun its work on defusing the improvised explosive device (IED) around noon Sunday. [break]
The IED in a bucket has been lying between two squares -- Shiva Chowk and Janak Chowk -- in the eastern city of Janakpur since early Sunday morning, police said.
Earlier, the district administration as well as Dhanusha police said the bomb disposal squad did not turn up despite being informed hours before.
"Although we informed the army about 5 a.m., they have still not arrived," a policeman said. The IED was spotted about 4.30 a.m. by locals in the area. The bomb disposal squad is to arrive from Nepal Army´s Parakauli Barrack, Mahottari district.
The IED is wrapped in paper with a black tape around it. (Earlier the police said it was a ´batta´ – very small beetle spice container -- bomb).
Police have cordoned off the area.
There is a big crowd of people on both sides of the spot where the beetle spice container with explosive is lying. People are terrified and angry that the bomb disposal squad has still not arrived. About 50 shops on either side have remained shut.
