A joint inspection team comprising officials of the Department of Commerce (DoC), Kathmandu District Administration Office (DAO), consumer rights bodies and police personnel conducted surprise inspection at the canteen and found the eatery at the government hospital serving substandard food.[break]
“The kitchen was unhygienic and stinky. We could see flies swarming around food items,” Tika Prashad Bhandari, market inspector of DoC, told Republica.
Worse still, the kitchen was close to restrooms of the hospital and dirty cloths were found dipped in pickles prepared to serve customers.
“The canteen was in a poor condition. Food items were kept in open and flies were swarming all over,” Bhandari added.
He further added that the team has sought clarification from Dr Buland Thapa, director of the hospital, and Dr Damodar Pokharel, vice-chancellor of Nepal Academy of Medical Sciences - that operates the hospital.
“We haven´t taken any action as the high-level officials of the hospital have promised to correct their weaknesses,” a member of the inspection team added. He also said the officials have made a written commitment to improve condition of canteen within a month.
Meanwhile, the team conducted inspection at a canteen in LRI School, Kalanki, and directed the operator to maintain price list of products.
“We found nothing wrong on food hygiene and sanitation at the canteen,” Bhandari added.
