KATHMANDU, April 22: Beneath Everest - Nepal Reborn, a documentary by Tulsi Bhandari, was screened at St Xavier´s College, Maitighar.

The documentary which is about the People´s Revolution - 2, was screened by the Department of Social Work.[break]

The 90 minute-long documentary was screened in front of 100 exuberant students. The documentary was then followed by a brief question-and-answer session, where the students raised various questions regarding the documentary and talked over important issues such as the Maoist movement and Nepal´s constitution.

“It´s a reality and I am very happy to have seen this reality. This documentary shows how it was not just the Maoists who violated the human rights. This actually shows how even the army had a role to play in human rights violation,” says Aashish Adhikari, student of Social Work.

Another student, Anuja Sharma, said, “From this documentary, I have seen that if people can´t eat and sleep, they will be forced to take up guns and turn revolutionaries. In such conditions, even the educated people would act the way these people have acted.”

In the middle of these discussions, there was a very striking question raised by the moderator: “Can we bring about change without war?” Answers to this question were quite interesting with some students bringing examples of Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela, whereas other questioners brought in examples of Che Guevera and Mao Zedong and their successful revolutions. The debate seemed to go on as most participants were debating and the situation was so heated that at one point, the moderator had to stop everyone.

The producer and director of this documentary, Tulsi Bhandari, premiered this documentary in February with a lot of heated discussions. After that, he has already screened it in five various places including Martin Chautari and Bar Association. However, for him it has been a challenging job.

“We are trying to target the local level youths and engage them into discussions like this one. However, our main problem is funds and support. We are trying to collaborate with different NGOs and INGOs but most of them show negative responses, which are sad,” says Bhandari. He further adds, “After watching the documentary, most people praise its reality, but when it comes to helping us, they turn their backs. Today, I alone am working to take this documentary all around Nepal.”
