The medical condition known as cyclopia, named after the one-eyed giants of Greek mythology, is an extremely uncommon form of birth defect in humans, occurring as rarely as four times in 1,000 births, and is more commonly seen in animals.
The baby was born at a private hospital in El Senbellawein with other deformities as well and is not expected to survive beyond a few days. His single eye and missing nose is said to be a result of the eye sockets not having developed correctly in the womb.
A Saudi Arabian news website has reported that doctors believe this deformity to be a result of a combination of some medication the mother had taken or from exposure to radiation.
Dr Ahmed Badruddin, the doctor supervising the baby, said the infant was born with other deformities on his body and is only expected to survive a few days.
