KATHMANDU, Oct 24: The Accountability Watch Committee (AWC) of Nepal has expressed deep concern over the escalating violence in the Middle East, particularly in Gaza and Lebanon, amidst rising tensions between Israel and Iran. In a press statement released today, the committee condemned the ongoing humanitarian crisis, emphasizing the urgent need for a ceasefire and accountability for human right violations.
The AWC highlighted the catastrophic impact of the conflict, noting that between October 7, 2023, and October 15, 2024, an estimated 42,344 Palestinians have lost their lives, with over 99,000 injured. Approximately 10,000 individuals are reported missing, many believed to be trapped under rubble. The blockade of essential aid has left the population without access to food, clean water, and medical care, exacerbating the humanitarian disaster. More than half of Gaza’s housing has been damaged or destroyed, and the healthcare system is on the brink of collapse, with 17 out of 36 hospitals only partially operational.
The organization strongly condemned attacks on civilians by both sides and called for an immediate halt to Israel's disproportionate military responses. They described the denial of humanitarian aid as a serious violation of international law and stressed the need for protecting civilian lives and ensuring access to humanitarian assistance.

In the press statement, the AWC has urged the international community, particularly the United Nations, to advocate for a ceasefire, insisting that dialogue and respect for human rights are essential for lasting peace. They referenced warnings from the International Court of Justice regarding the risk of genocide against Palestinians and called for accountability for those responsible for mass atrocities.
In addition, the group urged the Government of Nepal to prioritize the safety of Nepali workers in conflict zones and to facilitate their safe return. They also called for diplomatic efforts to secure the release of Bipin Joshi, a Nepali national reportedly held hostage by Hamas.
