KATHMANDU, Dec 14: Australia is reopening its borders for foreigners from Wednesday, after halting their entry for around two years following the risks of the coronavirus pandemic.

According to the international media, the Australian government is allowing entry of international students and skilled workers from December 15. The country has halted entry to foreigners since March 2020.

Earlier, the Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison had announced to reopen the Australian borders from December 1. However, the plan was put on hold citing growing fears over the Omicron variant.

The move of the Australian government is expected to give respite to a large number of foreigners including Nepali students who have already received visas, but are not allowed to go to the country. According to the records of the Australian government, over 235,000 foreign citizens have been granted visas as of October. Among them, around 160,000 are students.
