Australia eliminates Pakistan with 21-run win at WT20

MOHALI, India, March 25: Australia eliminated 2009 champion Pakistan in a 21-run group-stage win on Friday and kept alive its own hopes of a first World Twenty20 title.

Captain Steven Smith smashed seven fours in an unbeaten 61 off 43 balls to help post an imposing 193-4 after electing to bat in the Group 2 game. Pakistan could manage only 172-8 in reply, undone by James Faulkner's 5-27.With New Zealand already assured of a semifinal berth from the group with three straight wins, Australia's next game against India here on Sunday has become a virtual quarterfinal with the winner advancing to the last four.

Shane Watson (44 not out in 21 balls) and Glenn Maxwell (30 in 18) helped Australia swell its total.

For Pakistan, Khalid Latif (46) and Shoaib Malik (40 not out) were the main scorers.
