KATHMANDU, Jan 7: Australia beat South Africa in the third and last Test in Sydney on Wednesday, according to cricinfo.com.
South Africa, overnight 62 for 1 were bowled out for 272 on the fifth day of an absorbing battle. The Proteas were chasing a target of 374 runs. [break]
Dale Steyn and Makhaya Ntini frustrated the Kangaroos superbly, and then a brave Graeme Smith came out to bat with a broken left hand. He survived 17 balls before he was bowled. Ntini remains unbeaten on 28 from 75 balls. This Test was nerve wracking, pulsating, brilliant, said cricinfo.com. The pitch was scandalous but Ntini and Steyn applied themselves brilliantly.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first. They scored 445 all out (first innings) and 257/4 in the second. The Proteas replied with 327 for 9 in the first innings and 272 all out in the second.
Peter Siddle of Australia who took 8 wickets in the match and rattled South Africa was named Man of the Match while Smith was named Man of the Series for 326 runs.
