CHITWAN, June 1: The students´ union close to National People´s Front has launched an East-West torch rally against federalism. The rally that started from Bhimdutta Municipality in Kanchanpur on May 24 arrived in Chitwan on Monday.

The cadres of All Nepal National Independent Students Union (Sixth) have termed the rally as ´national unity goodwill torch rally´.

“We will submit a memorandum to Speaker of the Constituent Assembly on June 7 demanding that the parliament decide not to go to federalism as a part of our scheduled program,” said Rajendra Dhungana, president of the union.

Dhungana said they were working to spread the message that federalism will lead the country towards disintegration. He said that their campaign was focused on Tarai, where the demand of federalism is high.

“Federalism was never our need. This will only invite ethnic conflict. And the elements wanting for disintegration of the country will start fostering,” he added while addressing a press conference.

Of 24 political parties representing in the Constituent Assembly (CA), National People´s Front is the only party that is against federalism. The party has four seats in the 601-member CA. The party has been advocating democratic decentralization under unitary state structure.
