KATHMANDU, Jan 7: A tripartite meeting between the government, Maoist trade union and owners of jute mills from eastern Nepal reached an understanding to end week-long strike in industrial Sunsari-Morang corridor.
In a meeting held under the initiative of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal at CPN (Maoist) parliamentary party office in Singha Durbar, the three sides agreed to call the workers for talks to end the ongoing shutdown of work.
“We have agreed to call the workers for talks to end the strike and ensure that they get at least Rs 190 as daily wage,” said Salikram Jammakattel, chairman of Maoists’ All Nepal Trade Union Federation. He said the government must provide relief and other concessions to the mill owners to help them cope with the increased wage of the workers.
Industry Minister Ashta Laxmi Shakya said after the meeting that the government would work out modalities to give relief to the jute mill owners. She said the prime minister and finance minister would finalize the details.
Minsiter for Labor and transport Management Lekh Raj Bhatta said the Labor Ministry would hold talks with the agitating workers within a day or two.
The jute mill workers have enforced strike for the past one week demanding minimum Rs 190 as wage per day and have disrupted traffic in Itahari-Biratnagar section of Koshi Highway.
