A 'Friends' musical is officially in the works, and while we don't know much - we're already sold.

Described as a "loving parody" of the hit sitcom, the show will revolve around the same much-loved characters played by a brand new cast as they go about their everyday lives in late-nineties Manhattan, New York.

Kicking off in July in the UK, no word on if it will Australian shores, the show will then do a full season at the Edinburgh Fringe in August.

According to the show's synopsis, it begins when Ross' wife leaves him for another woman echoing the plotline in season one.

The show describes, "But then Rachel runs back into his life...will he end up with his one true love? Featuring original songs such as '(He's her) Lobster!', 'Richard's Moustache' and 'You're Over Me? When Were You Under Me?', the gang takes on naked Thursdays, a power cut, and a dinosaur convention."

It's written by director and die-hard Friends fan Miranda Larson, who has worked on shows including Tom Fletcher's Christmasaurus for the Hammersmith Apollo.

The original series followed the everyday lives of Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston), Phoebe Buffay (Lisa Kudrow), Monica Gellar (Courtney Cox), Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry), Ross Gellar (David Schwimmer) and Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc). After ten seasons, the series finished up in May 2004 and has since become one of the world's most iconic programs.

It's also not the first time the beloved sitcom has come to the stage; in 2017 New York City played host to off-Broadway production Friends! The Musical.
