KATHMANDU: While most of the publishing houses ran blank editorials Tuesday to protest Sunday’s attack on Himalmedia, a prominent mouthpiece of Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist), Janadesh National Weekly, carried a news story Tuesday blasting Himlamedia with accusations of pro-monarchy bias in the past, deliberate sacking of pro-Maoist workers, and corruption by media house’s promoter.

The weekly carried its own version of Sunday’s incident claiming Himalmedia’s publisher had been sacking pro-Maoist workers or transferring them to difficult deputations in the past.

“On Sunday, the publication’s management had called a joint meeting to solve the simmering dispute between workers and promoter. The workers who participated in the meeting were verbally and physically abused by goons hired by the publisher.  The workers retaliated. In the process, some journalists who attacked the workers were also injured,” the weekly claimed.

The weekly also accused the publishing house of running pro-monarchy and anti-insurgency reports until the constituent assembly elections were held in April. “It ran stories claiming there was heavy public opinion in favor of the monarchy and the Maoists would win less than 10 seats,” the weekly says.

The story has accused the Dixit family that runs the media house of getting property from the former royal family “which has not been nationalized”.

The news story further argues that the moral support of the media house to “regressive” and “expansionist” attack on left and nationalist forces cannot be a “mere coincidence”.

The Maoist mouthpiece said “professional” journalists and media houses have been surprised by Himamedia’s campaign against “independent” journalism.
