KATHMANDU, Oct 15: The ninth Global convention of Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) is beginning in Kathmandu from Tuesday.
According to NRNA General Secretary Badri KC, some 2,500 representatives from 81 countries are participating in the conference that will elect a new leadership of the umbrella organization of Nepalis living across the world. The conference being held at Hyatt Regency will conclude on October 17.
Two panels led by Kul Acharya and Hem Raj Sharma are contesting for a new leadership. Organizing a press conference in the capital on Monday, Acharya, who is one of the contenders for NRNA presidency, publicized his panel for the election.

Acharya’s panel consists of Keshab Paudel (America) Narendra Bhat (Middle East) and President Man KC (Australia) and Rabina Thapa (America) as candidates for the post of vice presidents. Similarly, Janaki Gurung (Belgium) and Som Sapkota are fielding their candidacies for the posts of general secretary and treasurer, respectively.
Speaking at the press conference, Acharya announced various 10 commitments to fulfill should he get elected in the post of NRNA president. He also cited his experience and the contribution he has made to the NRNA over the past 12 years as factors helping him win in the convention.
Similarly, Kumar Panta-led panel has Badri KC (Russia), Sonam Lama (America), and Sapila Rajbhandari as candidates for the post of vice presidents. Hem Raj Sharma is said to be fielding his candidacy for the post of general secretary from the Panta panel.
Likewise, Gauri Joshi (America) and Mahesh Shrestha (Japan) are preparing field their candidacies for the post of secretary and treasurer, respectively. Panta-led panel, however, has yet to announce its candidates.
The new election of NRNA is seen with much interest as this is an umbrella organization over 800 million Nepalis living in various countries outside Nepal. The government has expected to mobilize the skills, knowledge and capital of NRNA for the development and economic prosperity of the country.
NRNA was cheated while buying land in Baluwatar
NRNA General Secretary KC at the press conference said they were cheated by the land mafia when they procured a piece of land to build their office in Baluwatar.
The NRNA had also courted controversy after it was found that their office building was built on the land originally belonging to Lalita Niwas. The land of Lalita Niwas, which belongs to the government, was illegally sold to private individuals and organizations by the land mafia.
