Police have identified the dead as Prem Bahadur Bhatta of Taple-9, Sita Bhatta of Taple-9, Ganesh Bahadur Shrestha of Arupokhari-2, Lurke Pariyar of Pandung-5, Meenashree Shimkhada of Pandung-4, Gauri Devkota of Pandung-1, Purna Bahadur Gurung of Pandruk-9, 19-year-old Kalpana Khatri of Dhawa-5 and Lato Damai of Pandrung-8. Of those killed, seven died on the spot. Gauri Devkota died while undergoing treatment at Gorkha District Hospital, while Lato Damai died while being taken to Kathmandu for treatment.
Of those injured, 11 have sustained serious injuries and are receiving treatment in Kathmandu. Those seriously injured have been identified as Raju Bagale, Subash Bhattarai, Dev Bahadur Shrestha, Jamina Khatun, Ayab Miya, Pavitra Bhattarai, Hitija Miya, Abi Miya, Shabnam Miya, Sarina Shrestha and Gudiya Gurung. Rest of the injured are receiving treatment at Gorkha District Hospital.
The bus with registration number Na 2 Kha 7251 was heading from Gorkha bazaar to Panchkhuwa Deurali when it met with an accident at Katusghari of Taple-5. The bus veered off and plunged 150 meters down the road, according to Sub-Inspector Murtuja Miya of Taple Police Post.
“We started rescue work using trucks and motorcycles immediately after the accident,” he said.
One passenger who was trapped under the bus was rescued by the police and locals using a dozer. “The dozer had been taken there to widen the road. It was used to rescue the injured,” Miya said.
According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Gorakh Singh Bhandari, the bus was over-speeding and could not take a turn, leading to the accident.
