ILAM, Oct 5: A total of 400 women and children have been rescued from various border points with India while being taken to there likely for sex trafficking in the past eight months, shows a data made available by the Maiti Nepal, a non-government organization mainly focused on combating child and women trafficking. They all were lured with the promise of better jobs in India.

The rescued ( the possible victims), mostly belonging to 16-18 age groups, from various 51 districts have been handed over to their families, said Hom Dhakal, coordinator of the Pashupatinagar branch of the Maiti Nepal.

However, this is only the tip of the iceberg as the applications filed by respective families suggest that the whereabouts of many children and women apparently smuggled for various purposes including flesh trade with the promise of good jobs in India are yet to be traced, Dhakal said.

The figure is higher from districts in particular hit badly by the earthquake of April 25, 2015 including Nuwakot, Sindhupalchok, Dolakha and Ilam, he added.

The total 14 people have gone missing from Ilam in the past two months alone, said Superintendent of Police Sushil Kumar Yadav. "The search for the missing is going on."

People in the age range of 16 to 40 are more susceptible to become victims of trafficking, the Ilam police said.

The whereabouts of 76 women and children who had gone missing in the fiscal year 2072\73 are yet to be found, the police said while out of the total 116 who had gone missing in the FY 2070\71, the whereabouts of 31 is yet to be discovered. RSS
