KATHMANDU, Aug 13: Thirty-five Nepalis who went to a market across the border to buy daily essentials have been stranded in Indian territory for the past three days due to increasing level of water in the Mahakali River.

Locals of Pancheshwor area, the southern belt in the district, are forced to stay on Indian territory as they failed to cross the swollen river, said a local Dhanbir Karki. A group of 35 Nepalis reached the Indian markets on boats and trolley three days back. They have been taking refuge in the Indian villages, he added.[break]

When approached, Chief District Officer Homnath Niroula said he was not aware of the incident in the absence of communications.

People from many villages, including Pancheshwor, Mahakali, Sharmali and Aamchaura from the district visit the Indian markets for daily essentials as the district headquarters lies in two to three-day trek from the villages. The villages are at high risk of food insecurity.
