KATHMANDU, Jan 14: Three major armed groups in the Tarai have united and formed a single outfit called Tarai Janatantrik Party, according to Star FM Wednesday.
The three armed groups are Akhil Tarai Mukti Morcha (Jaya Krishna Goit), Janatantrik Tarai Mukti Morcha (Jawla) and United Janatantrik Terai Mukti Morcha (Pawan Giri). The first two have been involved in most of the murder, abduction and extortion cases in the Tarai, according to police.
According to Star FM, the decision to form a new party headed by Jaya Krishna Goit was taken in a meeting held at undisclosed location in India. The meeting also appointed Pawan Giri and Jawla Singh as vice-president and general secretary of the party, respectively.
In a telephonic conversation with the local media persons in Siraha in Nepal, newly appointed president Goit said that consultations are going on with other parties to form a united front with an objective of "liberating" Tarai.
These three have come together at a time when the government has begun holding formal dialogue with several armed groups from the Tarai – albeit smaller ones – after backroom parleys.
