Kedar Ghimire, popularly known as ‘Magne Budo’ from the hit TV show Meri Bassai, won our hearts as the meat fanatic son of an ailing mother in Chakka Panja who he ultimately fits with golden teeth.

But this television artist, actor, producer, and singer had been working his way into our hearts much before that. Acting in movies like ‘Cha Ekan Cha’ and ‘Wada Number 6’, Ghimire had forced the audience to sit up and take notice with his funny antics. Now all geared up for the release of Chakka Panja 2, Ghimire sat down with The Week’s Ashma Chhetri to talk about his journey so far. Here are the excerpts of the conversation.

What inspired you to pursue a career in acting?
When I was in grade seven I won the first prize at a poetry writing and reciting event. That was when I first understood that my interests are different from that of my classmates who wanted to become doctors and engineers.

I then began participating in stage-dramas that were held at my village during various festivals and events. Despite the fact that there was nobody to correct my mistakes or praise me for my hard work, I continued performing. I enjoyed it. I had to struggle a lot to get into the Nepali television industry but I persevered and here I am today.

Of all the types of characters you portray, which one do you enjoy the most?
I must confess that I really enjoy filming for comedy movies and I prefer portraying a comic role more than other types of roles. I have been appreciated for comic roles and I believe as an actor you have to give your audience what they want from you. And from me, I have come to realize, they expect comedy. It is also my strength and one must hone their strengths till they master it.

Does humor come naturally to you?
To be honest, comedy is not something you can learn in a day or two. It’s a skill that takes practice and patience. Like everything else, you have to work at it to be good at it. I see a lot of people dabbling in comedy but the most common mistake they make is expecting success in a short time. It’s a craft that needs to be honed till it becomes second nature. That’s what I am doing.

Can you share a memorable moment from the past?
It definitely has to be the time when I was first seen on screen. My dialogue was literally one sentence long but my parents were so proud of me, and the fact that their son had been featured in television. After that, the entire village treated me and my family with a sense of awe and fascination. I still remember how special I felt at that moment and I think it’s something I will always treasure.

As a performer, how do you handle mistakes when you are on stage?
I make mistakes every single time I am on stage and I don’t think this will ever change because I get distracted quite easily. If there is a technical problem, I get distracted, and if there is some confusion among the audience, I get distracted again. Then I forget my lines and have to make it seem like it’s all a part of the act. And with experience, you can actually pull that off.

Who is your favorite co-actor?
There are many talented actors with whom I have shared screen space and each one of them has helped me grow as an actor. But if I have to choose one, I would pick Rajaram Poudel. Though he is my senior, I feel very comfortable working with him and also take pride in the fact that I get to act alongside such a talent.

What’s special about your upcoming movie ‘Chakka Panja 2’?
Almost all the characters of popular television shows like ‘Tito Satya’ and ‘Jire Khursani’ are in Chakka Panja 2. You wouldn’t want to miss that. Also, the storyline of the movie will interest today’s youths. It’s an entertaining film and will make you laugh till your tummy hurts. Now that’s a good way to spend a weekend evening, isn’t it?
