KATHMANDU, April 6: In his strongest ever allegation against other political parties, Prime Minister and Chairman of Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Pushpa Kamal Dahal said those who are trying to obstruct the peace process are criminals and murderers. [break]

Without naming names—either individuals or political parties—Prime Minister Dahal said those who are against the peace process are creating hurdles in the Constituent Assembly and making remarks against army integration.

“You people will have to chase them away like a squirrel if they disrupt the peace process,” Dahal told his cadres gathered to celebrate People´s Movement Day at Tundikhel on Monday.

He charged that those who are against the peace process won’t let the Maoists formulate a progressive constitution. “Since they know that the Maoist is going to formulate a progressive constitution for farmers, the poor and marginalized people under its leadership, they don’t want it to get formulated. Therefore, they are creating numerous problems in our way,” the prime minister said.

Interestingly, Dahal, in an indirect way, acknowledged that the government under his leadership has not yet been able to address people’s problems. “We haven’t yet been able to work miracles as we had claimed earlier. But rest assured, we are on the way to working miracles,” Dahal said, adding, “But the reactionary forces are not allowing us to proceed with change.”

Unusually, Dahal mounted pointed criticism against recent remarks by CPN-UML senior leader Madhav Kumar Nepal.

“I heard a certain political leader bragging that the political parties made a mistake in bringing the Maoist into the government. I want to ask who he is. Is the state his father’s fiefdom?” he said, adding, “This is the biggest humiliation for the Nepali people.”

Despite his high-voltage criticism of other political parties without mentioning them by name, the prime minister was quick to add that he was not on the offensive in his remarks. “I am maintaining a defensive position. Things will go wrong if I go on the offensive,” he said amidst a swell of applause from his cadres. He added, “I have a still bigger role to play to bring all the political parties together in parliament.”

Sharing his six-month experience in government, Prime Minister Dahal said almost 95 per cent of the Nepal Army, the Armed Police Force and the Nepal Police as well as all the Nepalese people wanted peace under Maoist leadership.

He said Norway and Finland also wanted peace in Nepal under Maoist leadership. “But some goons and looters are trying to oust the Maoist from government to plunder the country,” he said.

He also warned his cadres to remain vigilant against any such attempts by the ‘looters’.

Prime Minister Dahal likewise accused the other political parties of not appreciating the achievements of the Maoist People’s movement. “I am surprised that they feel awkward accepting the fact that the Maoist’s people’s movement made the establishment of a republic possible in Nepal,” he said.
