The state-owned NEA has purchased the electricity at the rate of IRs 4.50 per unit, much cheaper than the current market price in India. The NEA has already been importing 20 MW electricity from India through Tanakpur as part of Tanakpur agreement under which Nepal has to get 70m units.
Latest import of power is part of an agreement made during Power Summit 2008 held in Kathmandu recently. As per the agreement, Nepal was to import 60 MW power from India, 20 MW through Tanakpur and another 40 MW from east. However, delay in reconstruction of transmission line damaged by Koshi floods last year has affected import of the power through eastern route. The delay in reconstruction has also affected import of another 60 MW being imported in the previous years.
