18-year-old Shivam Patel from India makes history by reaching Everest Base Camp on bicycle

KATHMANDU, Aug 1: An 18-year-old boy named Shivam Patel from Uttar Pradesh, India, is attracting worldwide attention. He has made history by reaching Mount Everest Base Camp on his bicycle.

Overcoming countless obstacles, Shivam became the youngest cyclist to reach Kala Patthar, standing at 5,364 meters on Mount Everest.

Shivam said he began his journey from Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp (EBC) on June 15. He underwent rigorous training to cycle long distances, acclimatize to high altitude, and build strength. His determination and passion matched his physical and mental state, leading to this astonishing achievement and inspiring many youths. Patel faced numerous challenges and moments of wanting to give up.

However, his passion kept him going, allowing him to proudly plant the Indian flag at the Everest Base Camp. He credited his success to the support from his family, friends, local guides, and people he met on the trip. He also received support from many others, including the US, Maharajganj MP, and the Union Minister of State for Finance, Pankaj Chaudhary.

Shivam receives huge appraisal and warm welcome

Upon his return through the India-Nepal Sunauli border, Shivam received a warm welcome. His father, Ramashish Patel, said, “My son’s achievement is a great source of pride for the whole district. I am very proud that he has brought such honor to our area.” In one of his interviews, Shivam mentioned that although he was mocked by people before, once he succeeded, everyone praised him.

Shivam’s achievement has not only garnered admiration but also inspired the new generation of adventurers. "There were moments when the sheer difficulty of the path made me question my resolve, but the thought of reaching EBC and setting an example for young adventurers kept me going," he said in a press conference after his historic ride.

Shivam has expressed his desire to pursue more adventures. He is already planning his next climb and is considering attempting more, including climbing Mount Everest again. He stated, “The journey to EBC has taught me that no dream is too big if you are willing to work hard and stay dedicated. I am excited about what lies ahead," with a determined smile.
