KATHMANDU, Dec 29: The World Food Program (WFP) on Tuesday dumped 6 metric tons of rotten rice that were being supplied for earthquake victims in Gorkha district.

The WFP dumped the rotten rice in Deurali VDC-5 by digging a hole in the ground. It is for the second time that the WFP has dumped rotten rice meant for the earthquake victims.

By now, it has disposed around 14 metric tons of rice that were to be supplied to the quake victims in Gorkha.

“After we found that some sacks of rice were rotten and inedible, we decided to dump them. It is natural for some sacks to get rotten while supplying a large amount of rice,” said Moti Thapa, chief of WFP office based in Gorkha.

WFP supplies rice for the district from Nepalgunj and Bharatpur. However, some officials at the WFP said that the rice grains got rotten as they were stored carelessly. The WFP has been storing rice in an open field under a temporary shade made up of tarpaulins.

The WFP dumped the rotten rice in presence of representatives of the District Administration Office and Department of Food Technology and Quality Control.

The WFP has been distributing rice in 20 VDCs of the district under the 'Food for Work' program.
