KATHMANDU, April 30: The Maoists have stated that in their show of strength they would field over half-a-million people in the capital to mark International Workers´ Day on Saturday and the subsequent nationwide general strike starting the next day.

Thousands of Maoist cadres have already arrived in Kathmandu for "Janaandola-3" to topple the government and formulate a “people´s constitution”. [break]

The party stated that thousands of volunteers would be mobilized to render the demonstrations peaceful, but the demonstrators would retaliate if the government resorted to violent tactics.

Dr Baburam Bhattarai, who heads the party´s publicity department, denied that the party has brought in cadres from across the country to create a situation of anarchy. “Only those from around Kathmandu Valley have arrived to take part in the demonstration,” he said.

In the capital, the Maoists will march from 18 different places including Sundhara, Baneswor and Balaju and converge at Khulamanch for a rally where top Maoist leaders including Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal are scheduled to speak.

The Maoist vice-chairman also said that the general strike would be called off if Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal resigns immediately.

He argued that the Maoists are for peace, constitution and a national government, and his party wants to go for a consensus system, not a majority system.

Dr Bhattarai denied reports that his party has launched an extortion drive and brought explosives and arms into the Valley. According to him, this was just propaganda disseminated by the ruling parties. Police have arrested a few Maoist cadres and seized explosives from some places including inside the Valley.

The Maoist vice-chairman also said that his party is launching a “people´s revolt” to seize state power and reiterated that the party just wants peace and constitution.

“The information disseminated by government media and its supporters is wrong,” said Dr Bhattarai. “Volunteers will take infiltrators trying to incite violence under their control,” he said. The party will hold press meets at the Janasanchar forum at 4 p.m. every day.
