POKHARA, July 17: Despite being a city of lakes, people of Pokhara are compelled to rely on rainwater after Friday´s flood in the Seti River swept away one of the main water supply lines.

The pipe line used to bring to Pokhara 160,000 liters of water per day from the Mardikhola River. To further worsen the situation, work to restore the pipeline remains delayed as continuous rains have swollen the Seti River.[break]

Denizens in Pokhara are compelled to use rain water for everything except for drinking purpose. "We have been using borewell water supplied by tanker trucks for drinking purpose and if that is not available then we buy bottled water," said Shree Krishna Manandhar, a resident of Pokhara.

He further added that due to the water crisis, despite booking borewell water two-three days in advance, there is no guarantee of delivery. "We have even started filtering and boiling the rainwater for drinking purpose," informed Manandhar.

The drinking water supply office in Pokhara said they have been trying their best to restore the pipeline as soon as possible. "Although we have started our work, due to continuous rainfall, we are facing problems," said Ishwar Prasad, the chief of the office. He said the office has also been distributing water through tankers.
