Veteran athlete Joshi passes away

KATHMANDU, Feb 28: Gajaraj Joshi, the only living Nepali participant of the First Asian Games held in Delhi, India in 1952, passed away on Sunday evening at the TU Teaching Hospital, Maharajgunj. He was 87.


Joshi, suffering from diabetes and high blood pressure, was undergoing treatment for the last 10 days. He had been living with his sons Ramhari and Indra Raj in Tokha, Kathmandu. Joshi is survived by his six sons and four daughters. [break]



Along with Krishna Barma, Min Bahadur Bista, Dev Bahadur Magar, Dam Bahadur and Chamak Bahadur, Joshi was part of the six-member Nepali team that had participated in the First Asian Games.



Joshi, a former Army man with the British Gurkha Regiment and the Nepal Army, took retirement from the NA in 1961. Later, he was elected the Pradhanpancha of Tokha.



Joshi learned different disciplines of sports during his recruitment in the British Gurkha Regiment.



Joshi was conferred the NSJF Lifetime Achievement award three years ago.
