According to Kalimati Fruits and Vegetable Market Development Board (KFMVDB), price of vegetables like tomato, cabbage, cauliflower, cow pea, French bean, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, smooth gourd mushroom and pointed gourd, among others, has witnessed significant fall in the wholesale market.Officials of the board said price of vegetables has come down as many people have left Kathmandu to different parts of the country after the earthquake. "Hundreds of thousands of people have let Kathmandu after the earthquake, leading to drop in demand. This resulted to price fall," Ramesh Dangol, planning officer of the board, told Republica.
According to him, the market is receiving around 500 tons of vegetable on a daily basis. Average daily demand on normal days hovers over 650 tons.
"Due to low demand, vegetables are rotting in wholesalers' stalls," he added.
According to Dangol, significant price drop has been witnessed in vegetables like cauliflower, tomato, cow pea, bitter gourd, smooth gourd and mushroom. While price of cow pea has come down to Rs 16 per kg from Rs 53 recorded a week ago, cauliflower has become cheaper by Rs 22 per kg to Rs 11. Similarly, price of tomato and bitter gourd has dropped by Rs 21 per kg and Rs 27 per kg to Rs 14 to Rs 23. Likewise, price of smooth gourd and mushroom have fell by Rs 34 per kg and Rs 50 per kg, respectively, to Rs 23 per kg and Rs 87 per kg.
Similarly, price of cabbage and French bean fell by Rs 4 per kg and Rs 17 per kg to Rs 9 per kg and Rs 21 per kg, respectively. Price of bottle gourd, too, dropped to Rs 1 per kg. A week earlier, it was selling at Rs 23 per kg.
