KATHMANDU, July 31: Prices of major seasonable vegetables in Kalimati Fruits and Vegetables Market have come down by Rs 2-15 per kg, thanks to improved supplies. Major vegetables had become dearer last week due to supply constraints and rainfall.

Popular vegetables like green soybean, local cauliflower, cabbage, carrot, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, green chilly, smooth gourd, snake gourd, cow pea, green onion, brinjal are selling at lower price compared to last week.[break]

According to Kalimati Fruit and Vegetable Market Development Board (KFVMDB), prices of major vegetables have decreased due to sufficient supplies from neighboring districts.

Geeta Prasad Acharya, a vegetable wholesaler at Kalimati market, said the market received more than 700 tons of vegetables on Tuesday. “The marked received an average of 450 tons a day last week. This is the highest supply figures for the month,” said Acharya.

Price of big tomato, which was selling for Rs 66 per kg last week, dropped to Rs 51 per kg on Tuesday. Similarly, small tomato is selling at Rs 51 per kg, down from last week´s Rs 61 per kg. Price of white potato has also dropped to Rs 25 per kg from last week´s Rs 28 per kg.

Red potato too has become cheaper by Rs 5 per kg and is selling at Rs 30 per kg. Local cauliflower, which was priced Rs 32 per kg last week, is presently selling at Rs 27 per kg.

Similarly, prices of cow pea, squash and long brinjal have come by Rs 2 per kg each and are selling at Rs 50, Rs 33 and Rs 26 respectively.

Though prices have dropped in the wholesale market, Acharya said consumers are still paying high price for vegetables.

“There is a huge difference between wholesale and retail rates of vegetables,” he said, adding: “This is happening because of the lack of proper pricing mechanism and market monitoring.”
