Unnamed (VR) wins grand prize in Ncell App Camp

KATHMANDU, Dec 22: Unnamed (VR) from Games and Entertainment category has won the grand prize of Ncell App Camp 2015.

The app is a first person 3D survival horror game with virtual reality. It is developed by a team of professionals with Sheetal Kumar Maharjan as the team leader, business developer and designer. Bibek Shahi Thakuri, Manish Shrestha and Saurav Malla Thakuri are the other members of the group.The team bagged Rs 500,000 as the grand prize winner. It also won Rs 250,000 for becoming category winner. The team will also get an opportunity to participate in an international event in 2016.

Similarly, Skin Consult, PinPeaks and Nidarr were the winners of Health, Tourism and Utilities categories, respectively. Developers of these apps won cash prize of Rs 250,000 each.

The Skin Consult diagnoses skin diseases through pictures and other details posted by patients on the app. Similarly, PinPeaks helps to identify, explore and locate major mountains and hills in Nepal using the smartphone camera. Likewise, Nidarr is a self-help app designed to provide secure and private platform to report gender-based violence and access needed information instantly.

Speaking at the concluding ceremony of Ncell App Camp 2015, Erim Taylanlar, CEO of Ncell, said that they were committed to continue the app camp in the years to come and provide platform for young brains. "We express our commitment to continue to keep in touch with those teams, who have not won this year, as their ideas are equally creative and competitive enough," said Taylanlar.

Ncell App Camp is a continuation of Ncell's CSR initiative launched in 2014, aiming to provide opportunities for young talents to apply their creativity for developing innovative solutions.

The winning teams were selected by a team comprising of Jyoti Tandukar of Alternative Technology, Karun Thapa of Mantra Media Network, Manohar Kumar Bhattarai, IT Expert, Prachanda Man Shrestha, former CEO of Nepal Tourism Board, Dr Pukar Malla of Dayitwa dot org, Dr Vishwa Prakash Shrivastava of College of Bio-Medical Engineering and Applied Sciences, and Tomas Martunas of LTk Capital, Lithuania.

Earlier, 150 teams were selected from a total of 738 ideas. The teams underwent a series of trainings and seminars to develop their app ideas and prepare a working prototype of their app called Minimum Viable Product (MVP). Twenty-four teams, six teams of from each category were shortlisted on the basis of pre-announced criteria: importance of problem the app aimed to solve, the app's business potential, its global scalability, and how the teams could articulate and present their ideas.
