KATHMANDU, June 19: The CPN-UML has condemned the government move to demote Acting General Manager of the state-run Nepal Television (NTV) Dipalmani Dhital over live broadcast of a mass rally taken out by opposition parties on June 8.

"The action taken against the media reminds one of the royal regime," reads a press statement issued Chief of Publicity Department of CPN-UML Pradeep Gyawali. [break]

The party has also condemned the letter sent by the Ministry of information and Communications to Image Channel over the content of one of its programs.

"CPN-UML condemns the government´s undemocratic and totalitarian move and expresses strong determination to fight for the right to expression," reads the press statement.

A cabinet meeting on Monday had decided to relieve Dhital from the post of general manager. Last week, the information and communications minister had sought verbal clarifications from Dhital over the live broadcast of the opposition parties´ mass rally June 8 and coverage of protests against the government´s move to promulgate laws through ordinance.
