UML assigns Adhikari to talk to parties on CC head

KATHMANDU, Aug 14: Ruling Communist Party of Nepal (Unified Marxist Leninist) has entrusted senior party leader Bharat Mohan Adhikari with holding talks with other political parties on choosing chairperson of Constitutional Committee (CC) of the Constituent Assembly (CA).



A standing committee meeting of CPN-UML held at its head office in Balkhu on Friday nominated Adhikari as head of the committee. Adhikari will nominate other members of the committee, said the party in its statement issued on Friday.



The largest party in the CA - Unified CPN (Maoist) - and second largest Nepali Congress (NC) have staked their claim over the post that remained vacant ever since the then head of the committee Madhav Kumar Nepal became prime minister.



Lately, also small political parties have expressed their interest to head the committee.



The UML top meeting also discussed prime minister´s India visit that begins August 18.



"The meeting stressed on the need of strengthening bilateral relations keeping in view of the ongoing peace process and the task of constitution writing in time," the statement said.



The CA secretariat has announced that the election for CC chairperson would be held on Monday.
