UK pledges 230,000 direct jobs within 4 years

KATHMANDU, Jan 19: The British government has pledged to create 230,000 direct jobs through private sector development within four years while announcing £20m assistance to support Nepal´s peace process.



Visiting UK´s Secretary of State for International development Andrew Mitchell announced the assistance during his meeting with Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai in Dhulikhel Thursday morning, according to the prime minister´s personal secretary Bishwadeep Pandey. [break]



The British Embassy, Kathmandu in a statement said the UK government will create direct jobs through private sectors development within 2015 and build or upgrade 4232 km of road.



The UK government also aims to benefit 110,000 people from improved sanitation.



“The UK will help 4 million Nepalese to strengthen their ability to cope with natural disasters and the adverse impact of climate change,” the statement added.



Mitchell, who wrapped-up his two-day visit to Nepal Thursday, also praised the bravery of Gurkha soldiers.
